As most of us are aware, the use of herbs as medicine has been part of human culture for thousands of years and has truthfully evolved into a science. Modern allopathic medicine is relatively new in comparison, being only 150 or so years old in its current form. For us to say that herbal medicine is a true alternative to modern drugs is in essence a truth and yet some in modern medicine would dispute that statement wholeheartedly. On a personal note my children and myself have never needed or used pharmaceutical drugs, always turning to herbs for everything from bruises to colds, from infections to inflammation, and always successfully and without side effects.

Many folks feel overwhelmed when they start to venture into the world of herbs. After all there are thousands of herbs and there is often conflicting information with regards to their appropriate use. In this article I aim to outline some basic principles of herbology and also to convey some important information as to how to choose and use good quality herbs.

Firstly it is important to become aware of how to take your herbs. From experience and study, I am convinced that tinctures are the best way to get the highest amount of effective active ingredients contained in a plant. These tincture are essentially extracts made from fresh or dried herbs that have been soaked for a period of time in pure grain alcohol and distilled water, the ratio of those two being dependent on the type and state of the herb or herbs used. Some tinctures also use glycerine as a liquid medium of extraction. I personally prefer herbs preferred in a tincture form with fresh herbs and I also find that is beneficial to use herbs in combination with other herbs in a formula. This yields a more effective remedy, one that will always provide the results you need to ensure you health and recovery from illness. This is why it is better to obtain your herbal formulae from a reliable source that has an experienced herbalist on staff.  It is also good to start reading about herbs and grow some in your back yard. At home the easiest way to prepare herbs is in tea form. You can make teas from most herbs, the leafy materials being prepared differently from harder materials such as twigs, roots and barks. Leaves and flowers can be made into teas by pouring one cup of boiling water over the herb, covering it and leaving it to sit for about 15 minutes. Then you strain and drink. Harder materials such as twigs, roots and barks should be brought to a rolling boil and then simmered for about 15 minutes.

We all must take responsibility for our own health and that includes helping protect ourselves from preventable disease and premature death. Once you are active on a regular basis, you will enjoy many benefits, physically, mentally and emotionally.

So, instead of quitting the way most people do – they quit thinking big and they quit well before they even reach their lofty goals, go a different route and quit doing some of the things that are standing in your way and you might see a different outcome than you expect.

Specifically, the National Coffee Association’s just-published 2007 National Coffee Drinking Trends (NCDT) report reveals that 57% of American adults drink coffee daily, while 51% consume soft drinks daily. And 81% of American adults drink coffee, with 67% doing so at least once a week.

Have you ever finished something you were eating and thought; why did I ever eat that? Perhaps a moment of lucid conscious awareness populated your discerning mind for a brief moment in the otherwise routine blur of life. The big question is, how aware are we, if at all, of what gets past our lips on an inward journey, or even an outward one if we want to add another dimension to this discussion.

The truth of the matter in my estimation, is that we mostly eat driven by hunger or habit, compulsion or craving, yet rarely with any concern over desired beneficial outcome. That is to say, we hardly ever consider whether what we are eating, or drinking, for that matter, is going to truly nourish us in any manner. I would say then, that deepening our present awareness over the act of preparing, eating and drinking, could potentially have a radically beneficial effect over our health and that of all those we come into contact with.

Where do we start, you might ask. I believe we start with the conscious decision to take a little time, time to decide what we want out of food and drink and whether we are truly deciding upon our wants based upon a true desire to nurture self or other desires that have the reverse effect. Let us take the desire to eat something sweet for example. Do we choose a sweet thing to purely satisfy a craving or could we take this inner voice as a message that our bodies need something.

If we take the time to consider, rather that merely reaching for the closest, easiest and often least healthy item, then perhaps we can listen a little longer to that inner voice and with a little luck, determine a truer approximation of what our bodies would most benefit from. We could call this the eating of awareness.
